What we never collect
Parla never collects, stores or transmits: the addresses of pages you visit, page contents, the text that is read aloud, text you select, your browsing history, your cookies, your form data, your name, your email, or any account information. Parla does not ask you to create an account and does not require a sign-in.
How reading works (free version)
Page text is processed only in your browser’s memory and handed to the browser’s own speech synthesis (Web Speech API). This runs offline; the text is not sent to our server or to any third party. The data is discarded from memory when you stop reading or leave the page.
What is stored on your device
Only your preferences are kept in your browser’s local storage: reading speed, volume, voice, translation language, theme, interface language and, if you gave one, your star rating. If you use Pro, your license key and a random device ID generated at install are also stored. Preferences never leave your device; you can erase them with “Reset” on the Settings page.
Parla Pro (optional)
If you activate the Pro AI voices: (1) License check: your license key and the random device ID are sent to our server (n8n.gelisimapps.com); the key is verified with our sales platform, Gumroad. The device ID is kept only to limit one key to 3 devices. (2) Voice generation: the text of the sentences being read is sent through our server to our voice provider, ElevenLabs, and returned as audio. We do not store this text or use it for anything else; processing on ElevenLabs’ side is covered by the ElevenLabs privacy policy. No page address, browsing history or identity information is sent. (3) Payment: handled entirely by Gumroad; your card details never reach us. If you do not use Pro, none of this happens.
A one-time install signal
When the extension is first installed, a single notification is sent to our server. It contains only: the extension version and your browser interface language (for example “0.1.0” and “en”). This lets us see how many people installed the extension. Our server derives an approximate location (city and country) from the IP address the notification comes from; the IP address itself is not stored. No identifier or anything else identifying you is recorded, and this notification is sent only once.
Anonymous usage signal (0.1.5 and later)
While a page is being read aloud, a small signal is sent to our server once a minute. It contains only: the random device ID created at install, the extension version and the interface language. The address, content or text of the page you are reading is never sent. Our server derives an approximate city and country from the IP address; the IP address is not stored. This lets us see how many people are using Parla now and in recent days. If you use Pro, your device ID is linked to your license, so this usage can be associated with your subscription email. The signal stops when reading stops.
Uninstall survey
When you remove the extension, a survey page opens. It is entirely optional; you may close it without entering anything. If you submit it, we record only the reason you selected, the optional note you typed, the extension version and the interface language. This is used solely to improve the extension.
Why the permissions
activeTab and scripting: only so that, when you press “Read this page”, the text on that one tab can be read. Parla does not watch your pages in the background. storage: to remember your preferences and (with Pro) your license. Parla does not request the tabs permission and cannot see which tabs you have open.
Third parties
Parla contains no advertising networks, analytics tools or trackers. Your data is never sold or rented. Only when Pro is used is it shared, for the purposes described above, with ElevenLabs (voice generation) and Gumroad (payment and licensing).
